Branding and Design for Asset Management and Financial Services Firms

Financial services firms have traditionally built their reputations around performance, expertise, relationships, and trust.

Those things still matter. But the way clients evaluate financial brands has changed.

Today, an investor, institution, prospective client, employee, or strategic partner may encounter a firm through its website long before speaking with anyone on its team. Asset managers are competing with firms that increasingly look and communicate like modern technology companies. Banks are rethinking legacy digital experiences. Fintech companies need to establish credibility quickly without losing the energy that made them different in the first place.

The result is a difficult branding challenge: How do you make a financial services firm feel differentiated, modern, and compelling without sacrificing the credibility the category demands?

At Wolf&Whale, we approach financial services branding and design as more than an exercise in visual identity. We help firms clarify what makes them valuable, translate that positioning into a distinctive brand, and build digital experiences that make complex products and ideas easier to understand.

Our experience spans asset management, banking, fintech, payments, consumer finance, and financial technology, including work for Reckoner Capital Management, B1BANK, Sendwave, Welcome Tech, Finmain, and financial products within Goldman Sachs, where Wolf&Whale founder and Creative Director Todd Torabi previously led UX work.

Why financial services branding is changing

For decades, many financial brands followed a similar visual formula. Blue. Serif typography. Abstract geometric imagery. Photographs of skylines. Language about trust, partnership, discipline, and long-term thinking.

Those conventions developed for a reason. Financial institutions need to communicate stability. But when an entire category uses the same signals, credibility can quickly become indistinguishable from sameness. The strongest financial services brands today have to accomplish two objectives simultaneously: Build confidence and create distinction.

That means understanding which conventions reinforce trust and which ones can be challenged.

For an established asset manager, differentiation might come through a sharper investment narrative and a more editorial digital experience. For a challenger bank, it might mean simplifying an increasingly complex portfolio of products. For a fintech company, it may mean building enough institutional credibility to make an unfamiliar product feel established.

The right answer is rarely to simply make the brand look more contemporary. It is to understand what the business needs audiences to believe and then build the brand around that idea.

Our experience designing for financial services

Wolf&Whale partnered with Reckoner Capital Management to develop its brand identity, messaging platform, and website as the firm prepared to launch its investment business and publicly traded ETF products.

The challenge was bigger than creating an investment management website.

Reckoner needed to establish credibility as a new entrant while clearly communicating sophisticated investment strategies to multiple audiences. We helped define how the company positioned itself, created a distinctive visual system, and designed digital experiences that made its strategies and products easier to understand.

That foundation supported the launch and expansion of the Reckoner brand, including its ETF products.

The project illustrates an important principle in asset management branding: differentiation cannot come exclusively from visual design. The investment philosophy, business story, messaging, identity, product architecture, and digital experience have to reinforce one another.

B1Bank

Our work with B1BANK, in collaboration with the consultancy G&Co, brought us into a different part of the financial services landscape.

Bank websites have a particularly complicated job. They need to serve existing customers, communicate a broad portfolio of services, support different audience segments, and maintain a sense of institutional trust while competing with increasingly sophisticated digital-first financial companies.

Our design work explored how a contemporary banking experience could feel clearer and more cohesive without disconnecting the digital brand from the institution behind it.

For banks and established financial institutions, modernization works best when it feels evolutionary rather than cosmetic.

Goldman Sachs

Before founding Wolf&Whale, Creative Director Todd Torabi led UX work for financial products at Goldman Sachs, including work connected to Marcus.

That experience helped shape a perspective we continue to bring to financial services engagements today: financial products often contain enormous underlying complexity, but the customer experience should not feel equally complicated.

Strong financial UX creates hierarchy around information, reduces unnecessary friction, establishes confidence at important decision points, and makes sophisticated systems understandable without oversimplifying them

Sendwave, Welcome Tech, and Finmain

Our broader experience also includes work connected to companies such as Sendwave, Welcome Tech, and Finmain, spanning financial technology, consumer financial experiences, and emerging platforms.

These engagements reinforce another important lesson: there is no single aesthetic for a successful financial brand.

An asset manager speaking to institutional investors has fundamentally different needs than a mobile financial product serving consumers. A regional bank operates within different expectations than a fintech startup.

The role of strategy is to determine what credibility and differentiation mean in each particular market rather than applying a predetermined financial-services design language.

Financial services websites need to do more than look credible

A website is often one of the most visible expressions of a financial services brand.

For asset managers and investment firms, it may need to communicate investment philosophy, strategies, leadership, research, funds, performance information, news, disclosures, and investor resources.

For banks and fintech companies, the experience may additionally need to explain products, drive acquisition, support existing customers, and connect to more complex product platforms.

That makes the website both a brand experience and a business tool.

We think about financial services website design across several interconnected layers, including positioning and messaging, information architecture, visual identity, and scalability.
